The Gem of the Sound

Burien is the Gem of the Sound; We aspire to be the best place to live, best place to raise a family, best place to start a business, best place for great food and the entertainment district of the Puget Sound. Our mission is to speak truth to power, holding government, business, education and faith communities accountable to their responsibilities, commitments and stated values, and to share stories that inspire, build unity and develop a culture of honor.

About Us

Get to know more about what makes us different.

Burien, Gem of the Sound? That thought might surprise numerous folks. But many of us believe that Burien’s destiny is to be the Gem of the Sound. A place where people of courage come to build families and wealth, a place of healing, a place whose voice is heard throughout our region as a voice of life, truth, reconciliation, and hope.

Gem of the Sound will highlight the many wonderful people in our city; the people who don’t make the news because they are too busy serving us, raising healthy families, building businesses, helping kids … quietly laboring to make this a better place. Our town is filled with older people of great wisdom, younger people with boundless energy, small businesses that have invested their time and money to provide for us, coaches who have changed kids’ lives, neighbors who have honed helpful skills. We have great architects, cooks, sommeliers, teachers, electricians, doctors, nurses, carpenters, plumbers, designers, law enforcement officers, investors, clergy, accountants, financiers, shop keepers, mission workers, gardeners, artists … some have been here for generations. Most have come more recently, many from all around the world seeking the American Dream of freedom and prosperity for their children.

In Gem of the Sound you will be meeting and hearing from these people, for they are the true gems that will transform our city.

Yet we must also be realistic. Increasingly, the corruption and oppression by abusive authority has made it harder and harder to better our city and the individuals who live here. Sadly, narcissism and personal, political ambitions in many of Burien’s city politicians have replaced the ethical concepts of doing: (1) “what is right and good for Burien” and (2) providing non-partisan, servant leadership to the residents and businesses in the city.  The wisdom and the voice of the citizens is being replaced by a small group who seem to believe they have the answer to everything and that all should live as they dictate. To add to this injustice, much, if not most of what is proscribed and then imposed reduces the dignity of the vulnerable and the quality of our city. To these agendas and the people who carry them out we will speak truth, not with anger, but with clarity, persistence and discipline (We will present facts, one of the main prongs of all we communicate!).
Through the years we have lost much of our sense of identity and destiny. The purpose of Gem of the Sound is to renew, heal, restore, and reveal who we are and why we are here.  We value your readership! We are here to be an agent with the majority of residents who want our city, Burien, to be the Gem of the Sound.
